We are sincerely invested in helping all students reach their academic, college and career, and social and emotional potential. This website is designed to provide current and up to date information on programming and services provided by our school counselors.
In order to support and build a strong relationship with students, counselors:
•Meet individually with students
•Work in groups with students
•Conduct presentations in classrooms
•Consult with parents, teachers and administrators
•Host evening programs
•Make referrals to professionals in the community
•Help students to use the Naviance/Family Connection, an internet-based guidance program
•Help seniors with the college application process and write letters of recommendation
Academic support – counselors:
•Help improve the academic success of all students by monitoring academic progress and performance and working with the teacher, students, and families to identify intervention strategies to improve performance for struggling students.
•Meet individually to help each student build a schedule and select courses that challenge them academically and set them on the right path to meet their post-secondary goals.
•Work with students individually or in groups to develop study, organizational and test-taking skills.
Social/emotional support – counselors:
•Counsel students at risk of succumbing to risky behaviors involving sex, alcohol and drugs. Counselors work with students, families and outside agencies to provide prevention strategies.
•Provide coping strategies for students who have undergone some element of stress or tragedy.
•Work with students to resolve conflict and create positive peer relationships.
•Help students with behavioral issues find success in the classroom by working on strategies with the student, teacher and parents.
•Help students deal with academic pressures as they face high-stakes testing, the challenges of college admissions, the scholarship and financial aid application process and entrance into a competitive job market.
Career development/post secondary planning support – counselors:
•Advise students in planning post-secondary educational and occupational goals using academic, career and labor market information. Counselors work with students analyzing and evaluating their abilities, interests, skills and achievement to develop immediate and long-range plans. They advise students about what needs to be done to enter college, career or the military.
•Use Naviance Family Connection as the main tool to help students plan for a successful transition out of high school through academic and career development. Students can use Family Connection to access information on careers and colleges, as well as complete inventories to learn more about themselves.
•Introduce students in gr. 9 to the high school transcript. Students are given a password to the Naviance Family Connection program and they begin building a high school resume and exploring careers.
•Push into gr. 10 classrooms to provide instruction on career exploration including Naviance Family Connection training, interest inventory and resume development.
•Hold post high school planning meetings with gr. 11 students. They also host a parent/student college evening programs.
•Process college applications, forms, and writing of letters of recommendation based on Senior Profile in gr. 12. They host an evening parent program on financial aid (FAFSA).
Family support – counselors:
•Work with parents to implement strategies at home that will help students be successful in school.
•Serve as a liaison between the school and community agencies to assist parents in obtaining needed services.
Transition support – counselors:
•Host student and parent orientations for students in gr. 8 to help students have a successful transition to high school.
•In gr. 9, counselors meet individually with each student to ensure they are successfully transitioning to high school.
COMPREHENSIVE COUNSELING PLAN
Schenevus has developed a Comprehensive Counseling Plan based on the National Standards and model for Counseling, developed by the American School Counseling Association (ASCA). This model shifts the focus of counseling from a student-by-student system to a comprehensive and developmental program providing academic, career, and personal/social development for every PK–12 student.
